East End Echoes Vol. 1

East End Echoes was born out of a desire to document the stories of Latino/a/x/e immigrants and descendants of immigrants who have settled within Houston’s Historic East End.

East End Echoes nació del deseo de documentar las historias de inmigrantes latino/a/x/e y de descendientes de inmigrantes que se han asentado en el histórico East End de Houston.

I conducted interviews with various residents of the area, and then wove together musical pieces along with these recordings in order to create the GPS-enabled experience. The idea is to document and create a permanent archive within the city of Houston that enables people of all walks of life to listen to and get a sensibility of the East End through the eyes of Latino/a/x/e people.

Realicé entrevistas con diversos habitantes de la zona y luego entretejí piezas musicales junto con esas grabaciones para crear la experiencia habilitada por GPS. La idea es documentar y crear un archivo permanente dentro de la ciudad de Houston que permita a personas de todos los ámbitos escuchar y percibir el East End a través de los ojos de las personas latino/a/x/e.

The musical “cells” that makeup the experience are named after colors and numbers that are associated with the emotions of the speakers as well as the total number of sections into which the East End was divided to place the musical cells. As a participant puts on headphones and walks around, they go through the specific cells via their own unique and tailored journey - no two experiences of East End Echoes are the same.

Las «células» musicales que componen la experiencia llevan nombres de colores y números asociados con las emociones de quienes hablan, así como con el número total de secciones en que se dividió el East End para colocar las células musicales. Cuando une participante se pone los audífonos y camina, atraviesa células específicas a lo largo de su propio recorrido, único y personalizado: no hay dos experiencias de East End Echoes iguales.

Work on the installation is ongoing. The hope of this project is to slowly but surely conduct more interviews with more people, eventually covering as much of the diversity of the city as possible, and create an artistic and musical testament to the city’s inhabitants, through their own words and on their terms.

El trabajo en la instalación sigue en curso. La esperanza de este proyecto es, poco a poco pero con paso firme, realizar más entrevistas con más personas, abarcando con el tiempo la mayor diversidad posible de la ciudad, y crear un testimonio artístico y musical de sus habitantes, con sus propias palabras y en sus propios términos.
